100 Questions for Webmasters
Saw this and thought it'd be fun to do maybe I'll move it in the future but for now I'm putting it in the inscriptions! Source is here
EDIT June 18th, 2026: Decided to rewrite the whole thing cause I wasn't happy with it.
- 1. Please introduce yourself.
- I'm Sullivan but I go by Ghast online, I'm the webzombie of this site and I have been described as "liking gross things" and "like dexter but instead of being a serial killer you're a pervert".
- 2. How long have you been making websites?
- Since 2017 with this website, though I only really got into it in 2025. Before that I barely knew html & css since I was more focused on readable content than making a site look good.
- 3. And what got you into the hobby?
- Originally I created this site cause I was disatisfied with sites like toyhouse for keeping track of information about my characters and so I started this site originally as like a wiki about the 1600+ OCs I had at the time. After spending some time on spacehey though I was reminded of how much I love and miss personalization on the web, though spacehey had it's own issues and still felt very limiting especially for an artist. I'd been wanting a place to upload my art to like a gallery ever since the death of deviantart and alternatives like sheezy.art while nice had issues and there were things i wanted to draw I couldn't post there. So this led to me turning the site into something much more /me/, where I could post absolutely everything.
- 4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
- Personal sites in general, I love seeing the wide variety of sites people make on the web, reflective of who they are as a person, it reall enriches your worldview. I see people who makes pages on their site where they talk about perfumes they like and it's interesting to see cause it's not the type of thing I'd ever think to make. I definitely trend towards websites of people who are similarly into dark things like I am though but I'll enjoy any website that looks cool.
- 5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
- For this version, V2, of the website I just made it up as I went along, the original version of this site was just a white background with black text all put in a <center> div and V2 was just editing that code into something nicer looking. For the website I've been working on with my friends we've been doing more thorough planning, assembling references, making mockups, etc. Similarly for V3 of this site I'm gonna do that kind of planning out.
- 6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
- The websites I have linked in the Mortuary are sites I think are cool and inspire me to make my own website cooler.
- 7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
- Making a space that's all me, I like that when people look at my site they get a little taste of who I am as a person. Self expression is very important to me and it's much easier to dress yourself and your space up online where your only limit is your skill than it is in real life.
- 8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
- Javascript is going to be the second death of me.
- 9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
- I got the idea to use a 3 column layout after seeing swifty's hq and from there every page became either two or three columns with some exceptions just cause it seemed the easiest format. V3 likely won't see much layout change between pages or it will who knows. I know for character pages in the future though they'll have layout differences to sorta personalize it to that character. Like I was thinking maybe Jasper's page could look like his own personal site as an example.
- 10. How confident are you with CSS?
- I'm still learning a lot like recently I started using box-sizing and clip-path, though I feel confident enough to be the frontend coder for what I'm working on with my friends and help them out. To be fair though I'm also the only one of my friends with CSS knowledge so my skill level maybe didn't matter in that regard.
- 11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
- First time I filled this out was the first time I saw this element and now I've actually read up on it so I think I get it I just personally haven't found any reason to use it. Maybe I could've used it for the details sidebar on gallery pages instead of just <b> and <p> but I'm not changing that now I'd have to edit every fucking page /again/.
- 12. What is your favourite HTML element?
- Still an odd question. I don't know.
- 13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
- Put a border on everything so I can see the boundaries of elements as I'm coding.
- 14. Do you know JavaScript?
- I've gone through a Javascript course on freecodecamp and one night, partway through the course, all of my memory of Javascript vanished from my mind leaving me unable to continue said course and trying to go back over what I had learned didn't help how much more stumped I suddenly felt.
- 15. How about PHP?
- No.
- 16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
- The headers and such are inspired by graffiti though my handwriting is pretty bad. There's also of course a grave/dead/undead theme because I'm a zombie and it's fun to call pages the obituary and mortuary. For V3 I'm tossing around a few ideas for themes and such, it's all just the kind of aesthetics I like though nothing special.
- 17. Are you more focused on content or design?
- The main priority of my website is having a space where I can show off my art in a way that I find nice so that takes precedent, in fact when I work on V3 the first pages I work on will be the gallery related ones. My second biggest priority is making a cool looking website I can feel happy looking at and maybe other people will tell me looks sick as hell? It's important to look sick as hell.
- 18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
- Would be cool but I'm broke.
- 19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
- Considering a lot of my own inspirations in general come from the 80s/90s/early 00s my own site is and will be to some degree "retro" so it's not like I can say anything bad. In fact the site I'm working on with friends is very Y2K inspired. Sites mirroring the look of old geocities with images upon a sparkly background don't particularly interest me but more built up y2k inspired sites definitely interest me. I know some people may be tired of frutiger aero but I still love to see it even if it's not my personal aesthetic.
- 20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
- I've checked and edited in the past to make it more valid but at this point in time I don't really care.
- 21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
- I love them! It's a nice little graphic you make that others can put on their websites and similarly you can put theirs. I need to remake my button though it's kind of shoddy, but that'll wait til V3.
- 22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
- I like them! I have a button wall on the mortuary page (linked above), I love going to people's button walls and clicking on ones that look cool and exploring those sites. I've found a lot of sites I follow through doing that!
- 23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
- V3 is basically a start over since I'm gonna be coding it without referencing V2's code but visually probably not too different, my aesthetics have basically been the same since I was like 15 and I have the tumblr gore blog from 2015 to prove it. My taste has just refined as I've gotten older and seen more art.
- 24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
- Yes I'm envious of how cool some people's sites are, really makes me wanna step up my game.
- 25. What text editor do you use?
- I've been using the neocities editor "like an idiot" for most of the time I've had this site but I've started using VSCode while working on the site with friends. I'm thinking I might switch to VSCodium instead though, I think Rick might actually use VSCodium? So I'll ask seir thoughts on it and see if se can help me set it up (he helped me set up VSCode i don't understand that shit).
- 26. Why do you use that one?
- Never really thought to use another editor since the neocities one worked fine.
- 27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
- I think it best to host the images along with everything else here on neocities, only occasionally using services like vgy.me and filegarden.
- 28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
- Originally I had never seen this debate but since I decided to sometime look at the neocities subreddit, big mistake, I've now seen this in the wild in the comments of posts. I don't really see what the big deal is they're just hosts at the end of the day and nothing about nekoweb pulls me to choose it over neocities, especially since they ban pornographic content depicting sexual violence and abuse which you'll note is one of the things I warn for on my index page. Neocities terms only give a vague "vulgar material" but I think as long as my sites marked 18+ I'll probably be fine. I honestly hope more website hosts appear.
- 29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
- 745.37 MB. Down from the last time I did this.
- 30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
- No. I will probably for V3 just cause I'll be coding it in a different editor but for now no.
- 31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
- Both have their merits, I'm not anti-minimalism like a lot of people are but I think a lot of the time it's not done well and there's of course when something begins to oversaturate the people not really into that will experience fatigue towards it. Personally I like more visual websites though, I love page decorations and doodads and such, I definitely want my website to have something a bit more visual going on.
- 32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
- I like black and red, red is my favourite color. I'm planning on making the red I use in my art have a bit of an orange tint to it though cause I think that'll look real nice even if pure #FF0000 is my favourite, though i love all shades of red. I might go for a more industrial aesthetic maybe though but I may still push the colors towards that red like the rest of my art. Black will of course be ever present I'm always dressed in black.
- 33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
- No can't imagine why I'd ever want to.
- 34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
- None of my friends have websites, though some have expressed some interest, so not really at the moment.
- 35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
- Since I quit my last job I don't really interact with many people IRL at the moment and I'm not particularly close to any of my family besides maybe my dad and my late grandpa. I never felt inclined to tell my dad, hell he probably doesn't even know what my art looks like, and while he /probably/ wouldn't care, especially since I inherited a lot of my taste from him, I would not want him seeing a lot of the things on here still. Given the nature of the content I want on here I'm not inclined to tell people I'm not close with. I also don't have any IRL friends besides Aster and we mostly hang out online together. Aster of course knows, we've known each other since second grade, he knows. One day I'll live with Donnie and Ian though and they will be my IRL friends and they know.
- 36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
- I update my website whenever. Adding new art to my website is an update so most of them are that.
- 37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
- I had the original look from 2017 to 2025 and V3 is still only in planning so not really.
- 38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
- Mix of me focused and hobby focused, though I consider my art to be pretty vital to who I am as a person so really it's all me-focused.
- 39. Do you do web design professionally?
- Nope I'm completely a hobbyist and an amateur.
- 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
- No this is just a secondary hobby, my main one is drawing and while I'm not huge on monetizing my art I am setting up commissions for that instead. Currently I'm unemployed and looking for part-time. My last job was on the floor of a plastics factory though.
- 41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
- I just set up a new email for people to contact me with on here! I hope to use it but currently haven't.
- 42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
- I have accounts on other sites but I don't really use them much besides my fediverse account. I do use them especially for looking at art and i will post to them but overall if you wanna see my thoughts thats either here, dreamwidth, or my fediverse account.
- 43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
- I use discord to talk with my friends, unfortunately we haven't found a good alternative especially since we consider a feature like screensharing to be pretty vital, everytime we vc there is always someone screensharing, but a lot of alternative don't view it as such. I used vencord with a theme called skeumorphism though to make Discord look better because god is it ugly.
- 44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
- I love listening to music while I do things but if I'm writing descriptions and stuff or struggling particularly hard with code I'll turn it off to focus on my own words. I have some artists I like written in the obituary though admittedly it needs to be updated. I'll listen to whatever I like but I trend towards punk, goth, industrial, and such. Rock and metal though I suppose leaning more on the rock side of things.
- 45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
- I used to have a seperate personal site and this was just my characters and art website but I decided it was a lot easier to manage one big site than multiple smaller sites so I combined them. I still have the old personal site though, maybe one day I'll use it for something.
- 46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
- My site topic is "me" so I put whatever I want here according to my whims.
- 47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
- I Am... All Of Me
- 48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
- I've not made any friends through this hobby partly cause I struggle to socialize, especially since I'm bad with words, I've spent hours writing single comments because I worry too much about tone. Though I also just don't come to this hobby expecting to make friends, I'm not opposed to it though. I view other webmasters as my peers, especially my mutuals.
- 49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
- I don't really have any thoughts on this I'm not that type of knower.
- 50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
- USING LARGE FUCKING IMAGES WHEN IT DISPLAYS AT A WAY SMALLER SIZE. My internet is notoriously not very good to the point of being an injoke of my friend Aster, so sometimes I'll go on sites and I have to sit there and wait for the page to load. Certainly some of that can be because of amount and I know I said I like highly visual sites, but it's also sometimes really just because people are using 1000x1000 images when they only ever displays at 100x100. Please optimize at least some of your images.
- 51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
- /shrug
- 52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
- Yeah I like to use semantic HTML, I find it a lot easier to read and easier to code with. My real programming sin is I don't really tab my code, when I sent Rick my code for the frontend he had to add the tabbing for me lol.
- 53. Do you consider different browsers?
- No if you are using google chrome that is not my problem. As long as it looks good to me I don't care.
- 54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
- I started using Waterfox recently because of Firefox's decline and it's working decently enough, I don't really know enough about this type of thing to recomend or convince people of things. I use vivaldi as well but only for pinterest and little ceasers pizza.
- 55. And what OS are you on?
- Windows 10, if I'm ever forced I'll switch to Linux but currently I'm managing to stay on Windows 10 so that's not a concern right now.
- 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
- All the previous computers I had had windows so when I built my own PC I got windows.
- 57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
- Probably not I don't really bother with that. Most of the web is not just mobile-friendly but mobile-prioritized so I don't really care to. I hate smartphones and I would hate them less if this were not the case.
- 58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
- I don't mind it especially if it's easy to turn off, sometimes they really add to the vibes of the website and I can easily just mute the tab if need.
- 59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
- I think they're neat and I have a few I'm eyeing to join but I kinda wanna wait til I'm done with V3 and feel my site is more... presentable.
- 60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
- Nah, I like seeing others' though. Maybe some day I'll have a shrine or just a page dedicated to some things, but not now. Maybe I'd do like a Frankenstein one and I've had an idea of making a page where I talk about zombies in games and such.
- 61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
- I don't know, that's not the kind of thing I think about I just do what I like.
- 62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
- My ideal website is one I think looks cool.
- 63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
- Yes! Decorative assets like blinkies, buttons, stamps aren't made by me besides maybe some color editing but things like headers, some decorative elements, and of course all my art are mine. For V3 I may create more assets, I know I need to recreate all the headers especially the main GHSTMSK one I kind of hate looking at the current one it's so bad.
- 64. What are your favourite resource sites?
- MDN, mozilla may be shooting themselves in the food but man MDN is useful for reading wtf things do. Other than that I mostly learn from looking things up or inspecting other sites codes and trying stuff out myself.
- 65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
- Using the neocities editor as my text editor. It's soooo easy.
- 66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
- If you wanna do it do it now, even if you're bad at it, the time will pass anyways.
- 67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
- There's little bits here and there hardcoded but I try to keep things in CSS.
- 68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
- Presume this is about sites where the page links rather than taking you to a new url just load said page in an iframe on the page. I don't really have a strong opinion on them.
- 69. How about table-based layouts?
- I saw someone doing this once and it did baffle me.
- 70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
- I talked about this above! Currently I use all but mostly 3 and 2. For V3 I might not be so column based but I am planning on a side column for some navigation, though really it's just "i'll figure it out as I go" since I'm still really early in planning.
- 71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
- CSS these days I think, now that I know more I can do more.
- 72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
- The first version of this website was so barebones the homepage was a white background with black text and links all centered using the center element. Yes I have.
- 73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
- I make them when the need arises, the layout should fit the content I want.
- 74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
- Intermediate, not quite a beginner but nowhere near expert. I am the most informed on HTML and CSS of my friends though which is funny since Rick, who's literally a working programmer, sees me work on CSS and goes "this shit is like magic i don't even know where to begin reading that" lol.
- 75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
- When I'm just casually browsing no but if I see them doing something that piques my curiosity like "how are they doing that" I'll look. It's how I found out about clip-path and box-sizing.
- 76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
- Through making this site, going "how do I make/do this?" and then looking it up, and looking at other people's code.
- 77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
- Probably. I don't really know what elements that'd be though.
- 78. Thoughts on floating elements?
- Handy, especially for putting images and text next to each other.
- 79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
- I default to px, I've used % a bit for some things and I've touched rem but tbh I still don't really understand rem or em.
- 80. Do you have a favourite font?
- I really like Zombiebites you can see it in my art, hell it's the default font of my browser which makes for a fun contrast on some people's sites. I'm using Deicide Remain for the header of my dreamwidth, I definitely like the edgy fonts.
- 81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
- :)
- 82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
- Yup as I said earlier I love browsing people's sites and will click through button walls and such. I actually have a channel in the discord I have with my friends for sharing cool websites I see and I hope with enough propaganda I can get them to make their own sites too.
- 83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
- I mostly forget to use my bookmarks, the mortuary page is basically my bookmarks for me haha.
- 84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
- Vibes I guess. It'd be cool if people saw my website and thought it was gnarly.
- 85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
- Somewhat yeah, I built my own pc and hacked my 3DS and am considering hacking my switch, I'm an avid pirater I like to torrent. I tried to set up a DAS but the bay didn't work so I returned it. I hope to get a CRT TV someday though probably after I move so I don't have to move the thing as much. I collect a lot of physical media, I took a lot of it from my dad though, like the NIN VHS and such.
- 86. How often and for how long are you online?
- I am usually online all the time there's not much to do in this town especially since I can't drive and have no money, we don't even have a skatepark they got rid of it years ago.
- 87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
- Freaks, weirdos, whomsoever likes what they see.
- 88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
- I have never even thought about it I am learning new things everyday.
- 89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
- Absolutely not lol. I'm interested in learning it but really for the purposes of game development.
- 90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
- I still don't really understand what SSGs are and how they work cause i've never really tried one. Kind of scares me honestly *cowering*.
- 91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
- I have a view count on my homepage just cause I think it's fun.
- 92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
- Nah I've been wanting to though but I haven't seen any that really make me feel like posting in the threads, though I've also said I have trouble socializing so that's probably partly why.
- 93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
- All in the editor!! I've a couple times written in obsidian beforehand though and then copy pasted in.
- 94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
- My friends all say I'm the coolest guy they know and am epic and awesome, except Aster who only ever calls me a faggot. I don't know about to strangers though there's a lot of people out there with differing opinions.
- 95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
- My art archive goes back to when I was 8.
- 96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
- I have no desire to close my website ever but I'd definitely archive as much of it as I can before shutting down if I was ever forced to.
- 97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
- I'm a very open person perhaps because of my extravert nature (despite the social anxiety). The website is dedicated to my art and art is personal so i don't think i ever could be secretive.
- 98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
- I have a lot of friends but my absolute two best friends for several years are Aster and Donnie we are so close some people thought we were a polycule which was wild.
- 99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
- For decorative assets I resize the image to what they will be displayed at, the art archive uses smaller thumbnail images rather than trying to load the full size images immediately (lot of lazy loading being used), and I convert some things to webp and avif to save on file space. Yes.
- 100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
- I feel fine, definitely took longer rewriting this all then I expected, time goes by fast.
