100 Questions for Webmasters

Saw this and thought it'd be fun to do maybe I'll move it in the future but for now I'm putting it in the inscriptions! Source is here

1. Please introduce yourself.
I'm Sullivan or Ghast though you probably know this already if you're reading this. I'm a zombie on the net that likes gross things, drawing, and having a personal site!
2. How long have you been making websites?
I made this website you're on right now back in 2017 as a sort of wiki for my OCs as I had issues with toyhouse wanting money for customizing and I couldn't get say a fandom wiki. I also had another website which was intended to be a more personal site where I'd have things like games I played, what my interests were, and an archive of the vocaloid producer john. Both websites were extremely barebones for most of the time so I only really got into making websites in the past year when I decided to make this site my main site.
3. And what got you into the hobby?
I'm not sure what initially made me make a site especially since my (now abandoned) personal site was made first but I know this one as stated above was made cause I was dissatisfied with the options available for putting character information somewhere. I think what got me into it more recently was that I was on spacehey for a bit and being able to customize my page as much as that site allowed really reminded me how much I love personalization. Though spacehey was still limited and had hosts of other issues so making a personal site seemed like a much better way to get that personalization itch and it's awesome seeing all the sites everyone else makes!
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
I love seeing all sites it's nice to see people with varying interests and hobbies it really enriches your world view, like when I see people with pages dedicated to what perfumes they like it's really neat to read because it's something I'd never create. There's a lot of differing people in the world. Though i definitely trend towards other artists and other people who love dark and horror media.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
Currently I've just been kind of making it up as I go, I saw a 3 column layout and it seemed good so I went with that. For v3 I'm gonna try to actually plan out the design more though I'm not at that stage yet since I'm still just figuring out what I need on each page and such as well as working on another website for something else behind the scenes.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
Most of the buttons on my website link to websites I think are cool and inspiring but some of the ones that currently have me thinking about how much cooler my website could be are toribytes, cryb4by, error-666, espy.world, and uncanny valley.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
Getting to be able to make a space that feels like mine! I love how my site looks and I love knowing when people come here they're getting a taste of who I am before they even read my about! Self expression is kind of a big deal for me and unlike real life where I'm currently much more limited I can basically do anything I want on my website with the only big limitation being my ability to code.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
Javascript is definitely up there. I've also been struggling a lot with space since neocities free plan is 1GB and I'm now like 77% there. I don't mind html and css but coding is definitely not something I enjoy I like the end product (my website) more though.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
currently i'm using mostly the same layout I switch between 2 column and 3 column and a couple are just 1 it just depends on what the page needs. For v3 though I definitely may vary page layout more I was thinking it'd be fun to maybe design the video corner to be something inspired by older youtube who knows though.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
Good enough to help others out, I'm still learning a lot all the time but I have a good grasp on how to get a site looking how I want with relative ease.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
No this is in fact the first time I've seen this html tag lol I'll definitely have to read more on it later
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
What an odd question uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh img?
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Put a border on elements so I can see the boundaries of things as I'm coding, without them it can be hard to tell where one section ends and another begins.
14. Do you know JavaScript?
Not yet. As of January 19th 2026, I spent the last week dedicating my time to going through the freecodecamp course on it and then at some point all the knowledge vanished from my brain again so I definitely have to review things and still get through the rest of the course (I only got a quarter in).
15. How about PHP?
Not one bit and my more programming knowing friends have been quoted saying "Oh god PHP"
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Currently I just got a black and red theme cause my favourite color is red and I'm edgy. The headers I've made so far are just cool writing I did inspired by graffiti cause I love graffiti. For v3 I've got some potential theme ideas (you can probably guess them) but idk if they'll all mix well but I can definitely give it a try.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
Currently content though I definitely need to get into the design more but first and foremost what matters to me is being able to show off my art in the best way for me.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
Having my own domain name would be cool but uhhh that costs money and I am currently as of January 19th 2026 unemployed so even a cheap one is still an expense I dont want to have at the moment.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
Hmmmmm i don't know? It kind of depends? My thoughts on websites trying to copy the style of geocities vs websites with frutiger aero themes is going to be different. None of it's really judgemental though considering I also love a lot of old things, I'm out there looking at 90s "grunge" and stuff and getting inspired cause I've always been an edgy guy so I could just as easily be fit with the same label.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
This actually made me go check and sorta? It hates my image files having spaces in the names but I'm not renaming all my files to appease this checker when they work fine.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
I love them! It's neat having a nice little graphic to show off other sites you like and potentially any mutuals or any friends (*dies because none of my friends have personal sites yet but i'll bully them into it someday*).
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
I assume this is referring to when people have a page full of like 60 different buttons from different websites, I don't mind them people can do as they wish though they are a bit overwhelming and can make it a bit difficult to actually /look/ at them. If the buttons I have on the mortuary ever start getting like that I'd probably start sectioning them in some way.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
Well I'm kinda starting over with the v3 so we'll see when I'm designing it but really I have the same aesthetics and stuff so it'll probably share a lot of dna with v2
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
Yes I'm envious of how good people are at making websites i gotta step up my game I gotta make a cool website.
25. What text editor do you use?
I currently do everything in the neocities editor "like an idiot" though I have vscode for the other site I'm working on and may use it for v3 though i also have pheonix code downloaded as well but I don't know if it has easy posting to git like vscode so idk if i'll be getting too familiar with it anytime soon.
26. Why do you use that one?
Never thought to use anything else and got into habit of it
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
My image files are hosted here on neocities with some linking to the original files hosted on vgy.me.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
I wasn't even aware there was a debate on this I don't see the point in there even being one I think it's good that theres more than one provider for websites online I think it'd be bad if just neocities existed and i think we could use more honestly. You never know when a site is gonna change it's rules or be pressured by a larger company and having alternatives allows for people to be able to go somewhere to keep their stuff alive. I also just don't think one site fits all.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
773.91 MB and that's mostly just images I'm betting haha.
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Uhhhhh I should shouldn't I? I did download my website at one point but i think it was like not correct when i went to look in the zip files idk. I'll probably have backups when I do v3 though so yknow.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
I think both have their merits but I definetely love highly visual websites and have been wanting to add more page decorations and stuff to my website (i should make a name for my website call it the mausoleum or something idk)
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
I stick to black and red "cause my favourite color is red and I'm edgy".
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
Nope can't imagine why i'd want to.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
Currently none of my friends have a personal site it's just me so I feel somewhat alone (though some have expressed an interest in making one so i've got my eye on them). I've not made any friends through having a website partly cause I have anxiety and feel like I make people uncomfortable but goal of 2026 is to work on that and be more social. I have mutuals on neocities though including one of many years who whenever i see on other sites I point and go ":O! that's my neocities mutual!!"
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
No. I mentioned offhand having one to some of my coworkers at my last job but none of them are the type to be interested in that kind of thing, I'm unemployed now though so none of those people count anymore I guess. Beyond that... I don't really have anyone in my personal life? The only family member I see regularly is my dad since I live with him and I would not tell him about my website and the only IRL friend I have is Aster but he and I talk through the internet so we're kind of only IRL via meeting IRL and living in the same town. I guess since I'm planning on moving in with Donnie and Ian they'll be my IRLs and they both definitely know haha.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
I update my site whenever, depends on what I'm doing. For example I've been trying to convert some of the thumbnails in the art archive to webp and avif just to save file space and so that process has been like at least a month long thing that i've been doing almost every day though because i'm editing a json file neocities doesn't show it haha.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
Not really I only really changed the design when i went from v1 to v2 and then soon v3.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
It's me focused! To some degree hobby-focused since art is my hobby though it's also my biggest passion and i consider foundational to my being so. still me focused.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
Nope I'm completely a hobbyist and an amateur.
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
Don't think i'd ever do this professionally this is like a side hobby. Currently I'm unemployed and looking for part-time work and hoping to get commissions set up, my last job was on the floor of a factory doing various things, clipping parts, packaging parts, setting parts out to cool from the machines, putting metal inserts in hinges using a press, etc.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
Nah but I'm planning on doing so for my commissions just need to yknow get those set up and probably make a new email for that.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
I have a bsky account though I kind of hate bsky, I have a tumblr though these days I mostly just interact with it via my RSS feed, and I also have a fediverse account which is mainly what I use and post to several times a day, fediverse is where I met some of my best friends :). I guess I also have instagram though i dont post to it because I've always hated it, I mostly just see what my friends have sent me on it. There's other sites I go on but I don't think those quite count as social media? I actually wouldn't mind going on more non-personal sites but currently the state of the internet is not good and no ones making the sites I wish existed.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I use discord cause all my friends are there and I don't think i can convince them otherwise quite yet. I have vencord though and am using a theme called skeumorphism and it makes discord look soooo much better.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
Depends if I'm sitting here writing stuff I gotta think through like descriptions music can be kind of an issue or if I'm running into difficult code I'll turn it off but I love listening to music. As for the music I listen to you can find out on my about page I should add more to that list sometime.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
Originally I had a seperate personal site and this was just an art and characters site but I found that difficult to keep up with updating them both so I decided to merge them into one site and I don't regret it.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
My site's topic is "me" I put anything I want on here. I've been thinking about making a page where I just show off zombie characters from different media it's whatever I want.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
I Am... All Of Me
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
Not yet but like I said I've got mutuals I really appreciate :3
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
I am not a programmer knower so I don't know
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
USING LARGE FUCKING IMAGES WHEN IT DISPLAYS AT A WAY SMALLER SIZE this is one of my pet peeves but i'll see so many sites that take forever to load not because of the amount of images but because each image is like 2000x2000 pixels but is only ever displayed at like 100x100 resize your damn images for the love of god.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
Resize your images
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
I like semantic html because it just reads easier on my end, in particular it's a lot better than seeing like 5 div tags and having to like figure out which goes to which I should mention i don't indent my code this is a thing my programmer friends hate about my code
53. Do you consider different browsers?
No if you are using google chrome that is not my problem.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
I've been using friefox and unfortunately they've been shooting themselves in the foot lately so i don't know if i will. If I have to move i also have vivaldi installed that I only use for pinterest and my second gaiaonline account (which yes is chromium like google chrome) but currently im just chilling on version 128 with some inserted code to make it look like the firefox 88 design because I hated how 89 looked.
55. And what OS are you on?
Windows 10 currently, if i ever am forced maybe i'll switch to linux but that is not currently something I care enough about.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
When i built my pc i just went with it cause i'm used to windows
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
Probably not. I have looked at my site on my phone and it's kinda weird some pages are more friendly than others despite using the same stylesheet? idk. I never bother making my website mobile-compatible because I don't want people looking at my site on their phones. I hate what the smartphone has done to the internet death to the smartphone.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
I dont particularly mind it as long as it's easy to turn off.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I like webrings they're pretty cool. Currently I'm not in any but there's a couple i've been eyeing but I'm gonna wait for my v3 design for that (so much talk of v3 here lol)
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
Nah i don't have any shrines i like seeing others' though. I could definitely make shrines making one for Frankenstein has crossed my mind for example but i don't know.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
I don't know lol. That's not the kind of thing I think about I just do what I like.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i dunno
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
Yes! My assets are a mix of stuff I created and stuff I source elsewhere with many being edited by me to fit my site (i.e. making them red)
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
MDN for reading wtf everything is besides that uhhh I don't know I usually learn about resources from just browsing a bunch of different people's sites.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
Using the neocities editor as my text editor. It's soooo easy.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
You can use the center html tag no one is stopping you if you are getting frustrated figuring out how to make things center and shit like align-items doesn't seem to be working give up. Write code badly you're learning. I'm using the scrolling attribute on an iframe currently despite it being "obsolete" because I have yet to figure out how to get it to actually fucking work any other way.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
There's little bits here and there hardcoded particularly from when I was less knowledgable on the power of css but I try to keep things in css.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
I don't know?
69. How about table-based layouts?
I saw someone doing this once and it did baffle me.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
I talked about this above! currently I use all but mostly 3 and 2. For v3 though I might not be as columny i don't know we'll see as it fits my needs.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
Overall I've probably worked with HTML way more than CSS
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
The first version of this website was so barebones the homepage was a white background with black text and links all centered using the center tag. Yes I have.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I make them when the need arises the layout should fit the content i want so.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
Middle i'm definitely still an amateur but I am the most informed on HTML and CSS of my friends
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
Not generally but sometimes if they've got something going on i'm curious about i'll look like "how are you doing that"
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
Through making this site, going "how do I make/do this?" and then looking it up, and looking at other people's code.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
Maybe i don't know
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
Useful in circumstances like aligning images.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
I default to px though i've been using % more these days, i know it's recommended to use something that scales ike % but idk sometimes i want shit a specific size. I know of em but i don't understand it.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
I really like the zombiebites font I use in my art though i need to explore the world of fonts especially cause I'm interested in learning graphic design.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
:)
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
Yes! I love just going through people's sites I'll go through sites on the neocities discover page or i'll look at some persons website and just click through link and link I love seeing all the different sites out there. i was playing Hypnospace Outlaw for the first time today and playing it really made me crave going through people's sites.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
I bookmark things but honestly I forget to use my bookmarks all the time so I don't bookmark people's sites, the closest to that is putting their button in the mortuary.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
I've never really thought about that uhhhh I guess by my vibes? I don't know?
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
Somewhat yeah, I built my own pc and hacked my 3DS and am considering hacking my switch, I'm an avid pirater. I guess it depends on what we consider tech because technically a lot of things are technology though we no longer think of it as such. I like cool things I'm definitely a nerd/geek I hope to get a CRT TV someday though probably after I move so I don't have to move the thing almost 2000 miles (< not an exaggeration). I collect a lot of physical media a lot of it taken from my dad like the Nine Inch Nails VHS.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
I am usually online all the time there's not much to do in this town especially since I can't drive and have no money, we don't even have a skatepark they got rid of it years ago.
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
Freaks and weirdos
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
I have never even thought about it I am learning new things everyday
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
Absolutely not lol. I'm interested in learning it but really for the purposes of game development.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I only found out about those like last year and I don't know anything about them and everytime i try to read I get intimidated
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
I have a view count on my homepage just cause I think it's cute and more reliable than the neocities stats (and more long term too), like neocities can say i got 162 views yesterday but I don't buy that.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
No i've thought about getting into forums and I certainly read some. My friends and I at one point had a sort of fake forum where we all created personas to roleplay that was fun for a while my favourite was Epic Knight who no one actually knew who it was until after (it was Ice). I did make a private forum for sharing art related resources that my friends are on but i'm really the only person who posts to it. Maybe i'll look more into forums in the future i don't know.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
All in the neocities editor!! I've a couple times written in obsidian beforehand though and then copy pasted in.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
My friends all say I'm the coolest guy they know and am epic and awesome. I don't know about to strangers though there's a lot of people out there with differing opinions.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
My art archive goes back to when I was 8.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
I have no desire to close my website ever but I'd definitely archive as much of it as I can before shutting down if I was ever forced to
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I'm very revealing I'm a very open person perhaps because of my extrovert nature (despite the social anxeity), the website is dedicated to my art and art is personal so i don't think i ever could be secretive.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
I have a lot of friends but my absolute two best friends for several years are Aster and Donnie we are so close some people thought we were a polycule which was wild.
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
For decorative assets I resize the image to what they will be displayed at, the art archive uses smaller thumbnail images rather than trying to load the full size images immediately (lot of lazy loading being used), and I convert some things to webp and avif to save on file space. Yes.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
I feel fine I didn't read the questions beforehand so they were interesting.
